24. Gratitude

Simply Living Healthy – 40 tips in 40 days

So here’s something interesting I found…which builds on my “control yourself blog” from a few posts back…a way to increase your willpower.  It’s a study which linked the feelings of gratitude with the ability to exercise more patience, and hence have more control (or willpower) over life.  I feel no study is flawless so I know this isn’t the be all end all.  But it is just another reason to prove today’s tip may be more than just a ‘mental health, feel-good’ activity.  You can read more about the study here.

The gratitude project is the tip of the day.

It involves setting a timeframe (one week, one month, etc.) and finding three things each day you are grateful for.

Write them down after picking out your top three from the past 24 hours.

By finding gratitude in your everyday life; even in something so small as “sunshine”, you are actively seeking positive things in your life.  This in turn helps you to see all the good and turn away from society’s tendencies to always seek out the flaws and buy into consumeristic view of the world (i.e. you can only be happy if you have ______(fill in the blank)

Mine today include: the ability to exercise, good friends, and the sound of my children’s laughter (and it’s not even lunchtime yet!)

Once you start looking it kind of gets contagious!  Spread the happiness!
